Support for your child’s emotional well-being

Few things are harder than watching your child struggle and not knowing what will help. If your child is showing sudden behavior changes, having a hard time after a major life event (like divorce, a move, or a loss), or feeling overwhelmed by anxiety or sadness, counseling can help.

At Western Tidewater Community Services Board (WTCSB), we partner with parents and caregivers to support children and teens ages 5–18 with professional counseling, resources, and a plan that fits your family.

What youth counseling is

Youth counseling is a supportive space where children and teens can talk, learn coping skills, and better understand their emotions. WTCSB counselors take time to learn your child’s strengths, needs, and stressors. The goal is not just to reduce symptoms, but to help young people build skills that support long-term emotional health, including confidence, healthy relationships, and better coping when life changes.

Who youth counseling serves

Children and teens may benefit from counseling when they are experiencing:

  • Anxiety, stress, or worry that is hard to manage
  • Depression, low mood, or withdrawal
  • Grief and loss
  • Big behavior changes at home or school
  • Trouble with friendships, bullying, or social stress
  • Family transitions (divorce, separation, moves, conflict)
  • Low confidence, self-esteem, or negative self-talk
  • Self-harm or thoughts of self-harm
  • Emotional concerns related to autism or developmental disabilities

You’re not alone. Help is here.

If you are worried about your child and looking for answers, you do not have to carry that alone. WTCSB is here to support your family with compassionate care and practical next steps, so your child can feel safer, steadier, and more hopeful again.

How to Access Youth Mental Health Counseling?

Getting your child the help they need is a straightforward process through our Same Day Access program.

Same Day Access (SDA): You and your child can walk into any of our community counseling centers (located in Suffolk, Franklin, and Isle of Wight) during designated intake hours to receive an immediate clinical assessment.

No Referral Needed: You do not need a pediatrician’s referral or a school recommendation to begin. Simply call us at (757) 758-5106 or request an appointment online to find the best time to come in.

The First Step: During your intake assessment, a clinician will meet with you and your child to discuss their history, behaviors, and your concerns. This assessment allows us to create a personalized Individual Service Plan (ISP) on the spot.

How to Pay for My Visit

WTCSB accepts public insurance, private insurance, and self-pay. If you have insurance, we will use your coverage when eligible and let you know if any copays or costs apply. WTCSB’s published payment options include Virginia Medicaid (including CCC Plus plans), Medicare, and many commercial insurance plans.

If you do not have insurance, or if you are underinsured, WTCSB also offers income-based financial assistance through an Ability to Pay (ATP) system (often called a sliding scale). Fees are based on what you can afford, and some services may have different fee rules than others.

WTCSB’s published self-pay methods include cash, check, and major credit cards

Questions about cost? Call (757) 758-5106 and ask about payment options for the service you need and whether you qualify for Ability to Pay.
