A steady place to talk, listen, and feel less alone

Healing happens best in community. Whether you are navigating the challenges of recovery or seeking healthier ways to manage difficult emotions, support groups provide a safe, confidential space to connect with others who truly understand your experience. At Western Tidewater CSB, we believe that sharing your journey is a powerful step toward lasting change.

Support groups offer a unique form of encouragement that goes beyond traditional one-on-one therapy. In these meetings, you can gain new perspectives, learn practical coping strategies, and build a network of peers who hold you accountable while offering genuine empathy.

Currently, our virtual support groups focus on:

  • Substance Use and Recovery: Connect with others dedicated to maintaining a healthy, substance-free lifestyle while navigating the daily ups and downs of the recovery process.
  • Anger Management: Gain tools to process frustration and conflict in a constructive way, supported by a group focused on emotional regulation and personal growth.

We are actively working to expand our services, with in-person group meetings coming soon to our community centers. Because our schedules and group topics can evolve based on community needs, we encourage you to call us directly to check the most current availability.

Who support groups serve

WTCSB support groups are typically a fit for people who want added support alongside recovery or behavioral health care, including adults working toward sobriety, building relapse-prevention support, or learning healthier ways to manage anger. Some groups may be open to the public, while others may require a brief intake or referral so we can connect you to the right level of support.

You do not have to do this alone

If you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start, a support group can be a simple first step. Whether you are working on recovery, learning new ways to manage anger, or just trying to build steadier support, WTCSB is here to help you find the right fit.

How to Access Support Groups?

The easiest way to get started is to call WTCSB and ask about current support group options, including whether the group is virtual or in-person, the schedule, and whether there are any eligibility requirements (some groups are open to the public, while others may require an intake or referral so we can connect you to the right level of support).

Because group offerings can change, calling is the best way to confirm:

  • What groups are available right now (substance use/recovery, anger management)
  • Whether there is a waitlist
  • What you need to do before your first session (registration, brief screening, or intake)

If you need immediate help: If you are in crisis or feel unsafe, you can walk into the Crisis Receiving Center (CRC) 24/7 for urgent, compassionate support.

How to Pay for My Visit

WTCSB accepts public insurance, private insurance, and self-pay. If you have insurance, we will use your coverage when eligible and let you know if any copays or costs apply. WTCSB’s published payment options include Virginia Medicaid (including CCC Plus plans), Medicare, and many commercial insurance plans.

If you do not have insurance, or if you are underinsured, WTCSB also offers income-based financial assistance through an Ability to Pay (ATP) system (often called a sliding scale). Fees are based on what you can afford, and some services may have different fee rules than others.

WTCSB’s published self-pay methods include cash, check, and major credit cards

Questions about cost? Call (757) 758-5106 and ask about payment options for the service you need and whether you qualify for Ability to Pay.
