Support when you want to talk to someone who “gets it”

Peer support connects you with a peer specialist, someone who has lived experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges and is now in stable recovery. Peer specialists offer encouragement, practical support, and hope. They are living proof that recovery is possible.

What peer support is

Peer support is non-clinical, person-centered support. It is not therapy, and it does not replace counseling or medication management.

Instead, peer specialists can “walk alongside” you and help you:

  • Talk through what you are facing and what has helped others
  • Set practical recovery, wellness, or life goals
  • Stay connected to supports between appointments
  • Find community resources and next steps

Who peer support serves

  • Peer services can support adults who are:
  • Working through mental health challenges
  • Seeking help for substance use or recovery
  • Looking for support after a crisis visit or while building a plan for next steps

You’re not alone. Recovery is possible.

If you are tired of carrying this by yourself, peer support can be a steady next step. Talking with someone who has been through it can help you feel understood, reduce shame, and remind you that change is possible. WTCSB is here to help you find support that fits, one step at a time.

How to Access Peer Support?

The easiest way to get connected is to call WTCSB and ask for peer support services.

Because peer services can vary by program and location, staff can tell you what is currently available, what location is the best fit, and whether you need an intake or referral.

  • Start care through Same Day Access: https://www.wtcsb.org/same-day-access/
  • If you need urgent help: WTCSB’s Crisis Receiving Center (CRC) offers 24/7 walk-in support and includes peer support specialists as part of care.
  • If you need someone to talk to right now: You can call, text, or chat 988 for free, confidential support for mental health, substance use concerns, or emotional distress.
How to Pay for My Visit

WTCSB accepts public insurance, private insurance, and self-pay. If you have insurance, we will use your coverage when eligible and let you know if any copays or costs apply. WTCSB’s published payment options include Virginia Medicaid (including CCC Plus plans), Medicare, and many commercial insurance plans.

If you do not have insurance, or if you are underinsured, WTCSB also offers income-based financial assistance through an Ability to Pay (ATP) system (often called a sliding scale). Fees are based on what you can afford, and some services may have different fee rules than others.

WTCSB’s published self-pay methods include cash, check, and major credit cards

Questions about cost? Call (757) 758-5106 and ask about payment options for the service you need and whether you qualify for Ability to Pay.
