Support when you need a safe place to sober up

When someone is intoxicated or high, the next step can feel unclear. Social Detox offers a safe, supervised setting where a person can be monitored and supported while they sober up. At Western Tidewater CSB, Social Detox is described as non-medical support, meaning it is not medical detox and does not replace hospital-level care.

Social Detox can be a helpful option when the goal is safety, stabilization, and connection to next steps, without immediately involving law enforcement.

What Social Detox is

Social Detox is a supportive, monitored environment for someone who is under the influence to sober safely. At WTCSB’s Haven location, Social Detox is described as: “a safe place…to be monitored and get sober safely (not a medical detox).”

Social Detox may also be a starting point for connecting to ongoing substance use supports such as outpatient counseling and case management, when appropriate.

Who Social Detox serves

Social Detox may be a fit for adults who are currently under the influence and need a safe place to sober with supervision and support.

Social Detox is not the right setting for medical emergencies or severe withdrawal risk. If someone has chest pain, trouble breathing, a head injury, seizures, or is not waking up, call 911. If you are unsure, it is always safest to seek emergency medical care.

You’re Not Alone. Safe Support Starts Here.

If you or someone you care about is under the influence and you are not sure what to do next, you do not have to figure it out alone. WTCSB can help you find the safest next step, including 24/7 walk-in support through our Crisis Receiving Center when urgent help is needed.

How to Access Social Detox?

If this is urgent:

  • If someone is in immediate danger or having a medical emergency, call 911.
  • If someone needs urgent behavioral health support, WTCSB’s Crisis Receiving Center (CRC) offers 24/7 walk-in support and can help determine next steps.

To ask about Social Detox specifically:

  • Start with The Haven. Staff can help determine whether Social Detox is appropriate and what the next step should be.
  • You can access social detox 24/7 by walking into the Crisis Receiving Center. Call (757) 255-7133 to request a ride

For follow-up support after sobering: WTCSB can help connect you to ongoing care like Substance Abuse Counseling and Case Management.

How to Pay for My Visit

WTCSB accepts public insurance, private insurance, and self-pay. If you have insurance, we will use your coverage when eligible and let you know if any copays or costs apply. WTCSB’s published payment options include Virginia Medicaid (including CCC Plus plans), Medicare, and many commercial insurance plans.

If you do not have insurance, or if you are underinsured, WTCSB also offers income-based financial assistance through an Ability to Pay (ATP) system (often called a sliding scale). Fees are based on what you can afford, and some services may have different fee rules than others.

WTCSB’s published self-pay methods include cash, check, and major credit cards

Questions about cost? Call (757) 758-5106 and ask about payment options for the service you need and whether you qualify for Ability to Pay.
