Who Decides? A Guide to Substitute Decision Makers in Care and Treatment
Making decisions on behalf of another person is a responsibility that carries both legal and ethical weight.
This training will provide participants with a clear understanding of substitute decision makers—the individuals who are legally or formally empowered to act when someone is unable to make decisions for themselves.
Participants will learn:
- – The different types of substitute decision makers, including legal guardians, powers of attorney, and authorized representatives.
- – The role of advance medical and psychiatric directives in guiding care and decision-making.
- – The legal, clinical, and practical considerations involved in substitute decision-making.
- – Best practices for supporting individuals while respecting autonomy, dignity, and rights.
By the end of this training, you will be equipped with knowledge to confidently identify substitute decision makers, understand their authority, and navigate complex situations with clarity and compassion as well as navigate how to access assistance at Western Tidewater CSB.
