Immediate, mobile support for mental health crises

When a mental health or behavioral health crisis hits, getting immediate help can prevent the situation from escalating into a traumatic hospitalization. We know that navigating the healthcare system during a severe emotional emergency can be frustrating and overwhelming.

At Western Tidewater Community Services Board (WTCSB), our Regional Mental Health Crisis Region 5 (RC5) program is built on the commitment to do everything we can to help our community members avoid psychiatric hospitalization whenever possible, bringing compassionate, rapid care directly to you.

What the RC5 program is

RC5 is a 24/7 community-based Mobile Crisis Response service. Rather than requiring you to go to a hospital, our mobile responders travel to you to provide rapid assessment and early intervention.

This is a short-term, intensive emergency service (providing up to 72 hours of direct stabilization) designed to treat the immediate symptoms of mental or behavioral health conditions. RC5 staff collaborates closely with Emergency Services, case managers, and local stakeholders to assist with community-based stabilization. Services include:

Immediate clinical assessments and crisis intervention.

Up to 72 hours of short-term, community-based crisis stabilization.

Linkage to community partners, including psychiatric, case management, and counseling services.

Connection to a dedicated CSB Navigator for the continuation of care.

30-day post-discharge support and safety planning to ensure you remain stable after the initial crisis has passed.

Who the RC5 program serves

The RC5 program serves both adults and children experiencing a mental health crisis who are at high risk of admission to a psychiatric hospital or at risk of losing their current living placement.

(Note: If you are seeking crisis stabilization services for a child or adult with an Intellectual or Developmental Disability, such as Autism, those highly specialized services are provided through our REACH Mobile Crisis Team).

You’re not alone. Recovery support is here.

If you are trying to rebuild stability after a severe mental health crisis, you do not have to do it by yourself. The RC5 program can be a practical next step toward stronger routines, healthier coping, and more connection.

WTCSB is here to help you find the right level of support and move forward one step at a time.
